Best Time To Visit

Chamoli experiences fantastic weather throughout the year.The summers are pleasant with temperature ranging between 15 to 30 degrees Celcius. The area receives snowfall in the winter, temperatures dropping to freezing point. However, the monsoon season experiences excessive rain causing the area to be prone to landslides. The best time to visit Chamoli is May to October. It is the time when Badrinath Temple open.This year, 8th May (already announced by High Court Of Uttarakhand) and 9th November (tenative-not yet announced) mark the Badrinath temple opening and closing dates 2022 respectively. Regular rain showers take place in rainy season here which starts from July and end in September. So, normally people avoid to visit Badrinath during this period.

The Temple of Gangotri Dham and Yamunotri Dham opens on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya which marks the beginning of Char Dham Yatra. Both are open on 3rd may 2022.

Things to know before you visit

  • The temperature during rainy season hovers around 5–15 degrees Celsius. Rainfall starts to recede in September. The temperature ranges between 11°C and 14°C. The landslides may hinder the Yatra so it is advisable to keep buffer days.
  • In August, the average temperature of Badrinath ranges between 12°C and 16°C. During the daytime, the region remains humid. It is highly recommendable to carry a raincoat and umbrella. Keep buffer days in case you are planning a trip in the monsoon season.
  • Carry heavy woolens including caps, socks, thermals, and gloves in the winter season. Also, carry sunscreen and sunglasses to avoid sunburn.
  • Carry light woolens, if you are planning for Badrinath Yatra in the summer season.
  • In the monsoon, do not forget to carry an umbrella and raincoat.
  • Always carry a medical kit with necessary medications for fever, cough, and altitude sickness. Also, carry painkillers and antiseptic creams.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes while traveling.
  • Carry a battery-operated torch, fully-charged power banks, and extra batteries for cameras.Cover the batteries with warm clothes in winter. The battery gets dead in harsh winters.
  • Book accommodation prior as during the peak season the chances of getting good accommodation at a favorable price .
  • Carry important documents including tickets, cash, and photo identity proof. Pack them in a waterproof bag in the monsoon and winter season.

Chamoli does not have its own airport. The nearest airport to Chamoli is the Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, 222 km from Chamoli. From the airport, you can hire a taxi to reach Chamoli or take a bus. Rishikesh serves as the nearest airport to both Chamoli (202 km away) as well as Mana (150 km away).

By Train:-

The nearest railway station to chamoli is Rishikesh.Rishikesh railway stationis situated 202 kmbefore chamoli on NH-58.It is well connected to many major cities of India. Once you reach Rishikesh, hire a taxi for a comfortable ride to your destination. Buses fare also available from Rishikesh .

By Road:-

A well-maintained network of road connects Chamoli and Mana to other cities of Uttarakhand and neighbouring states. You can easily commute to these two villages by regular state-owned bus services and private buses. With easy access via NH58, you can hire a bus or a cab from Pauri, Rishikesh, Uttarkashi and Gopeshwar, etc. to reach Chamoli as well.
